Silyn’s Public License
Hey! Silyn here. I’m glad you’re interested in using my work in your own personal projects, and I’m all for it! This document outlines the terms under which you may or may not use my work in your own projects.
If anything is unclear or if you’re unsure what your rights are, feel free to send me an email at hello@silyn.art.
Which part of my discography can you use?
There is three categories of music in my discography:
-
Music that I made in my name and that I own the rights to.
-
Music that I made in my name, but did not own the rights to the original work in the first place (remixes, covers, etc.).
-
Music that I made for someone else and that I sold or gave away the rights to.
Only the first category is mine to give away. When you click on one of my songs in the discography, you can check whether it has a little certificate icon next to it. If the logo is not present, then use it at your own risk ;).
If you wish to use a piece of music that I made for someone else, you should check their own policy or contact them directly.
What projects can use my music?
Basically, as long as you’re not making money off your project, you can use my work however you want as long as you credit me.
If you plan to make money off your project (such as by selling it, or generally making it available through a paid service like Patreon), you must contact me first to discuss licensing terms. Generally I’ll be fine selling you a license for a small fixed fee depending on your project’s size and scope.
There are several exceptions regarding the “no commercial projects” rules.
Content Creators
If you are a content creator (YouTuber, streamer, etc.), you can use my music freely in your videos and streams as long as you credit me somewhere. You can monetize your videos, have sponsors, receive donations, etc. without needing to pay me or ask for permission. Note that you might receive a Content ID claim on your video, but I won’t take any action against it as long as the present policy is respected.
Promotion Channels
Promotion channels are another exception to the no commercial projects rule. If you own a music promotion channel (for example on YouTube), you may re-upload my music as long as:
- You credit the artist (me and potentially collaborators) properly with links to some of our socials (e.g. Twitter, YouTube, etc). Personally, I like YouTube the best because that’s where most of my stuff happens, but feel free to use whatever fits best for you.
- Don’t mislead your audience into believing you made the song. It must be clear that you are not the original artist producing the track.
Revenues generated from your promotion video are yours.
Once again, it’s possible to get a Content ID claim, but I won’t take any action against your video as long as the present policy is respected.
Can you distribute remixes of my music?
You’re free to remix my music as long as you credit me. You can release your remixes on commercial platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, etc. without needing to pay for a license or ask for permission.
However, you cannot claim the original work as your own. If you release a remix of one of my songs, it must differ significantly from the original work. Put your own spin on it! If you are unsure whether your remix sufficiently differs from the original work, feel free to contact me.
Can you use my music in a rhythm game?
Rhythm games sometimes provide ways to create levels using your own music. In that case, you can use my music in your custom map as long as you credit me as if it were a non-commercial project (even if the rhythm game itself is paid).
However, if you plan to distribute my music as part of the base commercial game, then you must contact me first to discuss potential licensing terms.
